How to Draw Rumi from Dr. Stone

Drawing anime characters accurately takes more than just tracing. I've done this a few hundred times, and the character design for Rumi from Dr. Stone has some specific challenges that aren't obvious until you actually sit down to draw it. The core of getting Rumi right comes down to three proportions: the eye shape, the hair volume, and the facial structure. Rumi has large, expressive eyes with heavy upper lids, a small nose (basically two dots), and soft but defined cheek lines. Her hair is one of the trickiest parts because it has that signature twin-tail style with loose strands framing the face. Start with a light circle for the head, then draw a smaller oval below it for the jaw. Rumi's face is rounded at the cheeks but tapers slightly at the chin. Don't make the jaw too sharp. The nose is barely a line, and the mouth is a small, gentle curve. Everything in her face is soft.

For the eyes, draw them wide and slightly downturned at the outer corners. The pupils are large and dark, usually colored in deep blue or purple depending on the scene. Leave a small white highlight in the upper-left area of each pupil. This gives her that characteristic anime shine. Now the hair. The base is a large rounded shape that goes past her shoulders. Draw the twin tails by splitting the back section into two symmetrical bunches, each tied about midway down their length. The top layer of hair should overlap the forehead slightly, creating a blunt fringe with uneven ends. Use flowing curves, not straight lines, for the bangs and tail strands. Individual strands should taper to a point. I spent probably three weeks struggling with the hair volume last year. Every time I'd finish, the twin tails looked flat and lifeless. What finally worked was drawing them as separate 3D cylinders before adding the strands. Once I treated each tail as a solid volume instead of a flat shape, everything clicked. The key is giving them slight gaps between them so they don't merge into one blob.

Refining the Details

Once the rough sketch is done, go over it with your final lines. Use varying stroke pressure. Thicker lines on the outer silhouette of the hair and thinner lines for facial features. This creates depth without any shading. Rumi's clothing consists of a simple outfit with a high collar and short sleeves. Keep the folds minimal. She doesn't have complex clothing like some other anime characters, so over-drawing fabric wrinkles will throw off the clean look the character is designed with. If you're coloring digitally, a typical palette would use lavender or soft purple for the hair, light blue for the eyes, and pale skin tones. Avoid oversaturating the colors. Rumi's design is intentionally pastel and muted.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest error people make is drawing the eyes too small. Rumi's eyes take up roughly 35-40% of the face width. If you shrink them down to standard proportions, she'll look like a different character entirely. Also, many artists make the hair too symmetrical. The twin tails should have slight asymmetry in their curve and position. One side can hang slightly lower or curl differently. Another issue is the bangs. Don't draw them as one solid block. They should have gaps where the forehead shows through, and the ends should be jagged or wispy, not uniform. There are limits to what you can learn from tutorials alone. If you're doing this for professional work or commission purposes, studying the official art by Boichi directly is essential. The official illustrations have a specific ink weight and line quality that no tutorial can fully capture. You need to see it at full resolution to understand how the artist handles the transitions between hair and skin.

The process itself usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour for a clean illustration at a comfortable size, maybe 2000 by 3000 pixels. A quick gesture sketch will take ten minutes. A fully shaded and colored piece can run two to three hours depending on your speed with rendering.

Resources

There are plenty of free reference sheets available online. Search for "Dr. Stone Rumi character design sheet" and you'll find official promotional art and fan compilations. For tutorial videos, channels that focus on anime portraiture rather than generic drawing will give you better results than broad introductory courses. Look for ones that specifically cover Boichi's art style, since his linework has a distinct thickness pattern that differs from Shueisha's typical house style.
