Como Tirar Textura Da Parede

Removing wall texture is more straightforward than most people expect, but it varies depending on what type of texture you're dealing with.

The first thing you need to figure out is whether your wall has a knockdown texture, orange peel, popcorn, or a plaster finish. Most modern apartments built in the last twenty years have knockdown or orange peel — the flatter the texture, the easier it's going to be to remove. Popcorn texture is a different beast entirely and you should approach that separately. For standard plaster or gesso textures, you'll need a garden sprayer, a putty knife (wide blade, 10-12cm), a sanding pole, and a dust mask. Wet the wall thoroughly with a sponge roller or sprayer. Let it sit for fifteen to twenty minutes so the water penetrates the plaster layer. You'll see the texture begin to soften and darken slightly. Then scrape. Not gently. The texture on top is just a thin coat over the base plaster, and it should come off in strips if you've let it hydrate long enough. Work in sections about one meter square so you don't let the wall dry before you're ready to scrape.

I once spent an entire afternoon fighting a texture that refused to budge. Turned out the previous owner had painted over it with enamel paint — the sealer layer was holding everything together. The workaround was to score the surface lightly with a keyhole saw in a cross-hatch pattern every thirty centimeters, then re-wet and wait longer. Took another hour but it came right off after that.

what actually happens when you scrape it

Removing texture doesn't mean you end up with a perfectly smooth wall. It means you end up with whatever was underneath the texture, which is usually still slightly uneven. You'll need to skim coat the whole surface with a thin layer of joint compound or massinha acrílica to level it out before painting. Factor in at least two days between scraping, skim coating, sanding, and priming if you want anything that looks like it came from a showroom. Here's the part nobody tells you: if your wall has cracks or damage underneath the texture, removing the texture exposes all of it. I found hairline cracks running across three rooms after scraping, cracks that were invisible behind the texture. Patching them adds time and material cost that you didn't budget for.

when scraping won't work

Some textures are actually integral to the plaster itself — called texturizado in Portuguese. This is common in Brazilian construction, where the final coat of reboco is applied with a float or sponge to create a rough finish. There's no texture layer sitting on top of the wall. The texture is the wall. In that case, scraping does nothing. You either sand it down, which creates an enormous amount of dust and takes hours per wall, or you cover it with drywall or a new plaster coat. Covering is faster but it eats into your room dimensions by about two centimeters. Choose based on whether you care more about time or space.

a note on popcorn texture

If your texture is the fluffy, irregular kind commonly found in older American homes, wet scraping won't work. That material is spray-applied styrofoam or asbestos composite, and it behaves completely differently. Scraping it dry just creates airborne particles you don't want breathing in. In that case, you need a heavy-duty scraper and a shop vacuum positioned right next to your scraping point to catch debris, or you cover it entirely with drywall. Some people sand it, but the dust cloud is brutal and the finish is never satisfying. A texture removal shovel — the wide, flat blade with notched edges — saves serious time compared to a regular putty knife. It's designed specifically to get under textured coatings and lift them without gouging the base wall. Also invest in a good respirator. The dust from sanding plaster and joint compound is not something you want in your lungs, and it stays airborne longer than you'd expect. Cover the floor with rolo crepé or plastic sheeting and tape it down. The runoff from wet scraping is slurry that will seep into cracks and grout lines if you don't protect everything. Cleaning it up after is worse than preventing it from getting everywhere in the first place.

the practical timeline

For a standard room with knockdown texture, expect four to six hours of active work plus drying time. Two rooms with heavier textures or enamel-sealed surfaces can stretch to a full weekend. Skim coating and finishing add another day or two. If you're painting over the result, prime first — fresh joint compound is extremely absorbent and will eat through your paint if you skip that step.
