Gato Da Perna Curta
Everything you need to know about owning a short-legged cat
They are small, sturdy, and absolutely everywhere in my feed now. The breeder market has exploded in the last five years. I adopted one three years ago and quickly learned that not everything online is accurate. Some of those photos make them sound like miracle creatures. They are not. This is a cat with a genetic mutation called achondroplasia. It affects the long bones in the legs, making them shorter relative to the body. The spine, ribs, and skull are generally normal. That is the baseline. Everything else is individual variation. The coat, color, size, and temperament depend entirely on which parent contributed which genes. You can get a shorthair, a longhair, a black cat, or a tabby. The short legs are the only consistent trait. Do not expect every kitten from the same litter to look identical.
Health realities most sellers will not tell you
Here is where people get confused. Short legs do not automatically mean broken health. But they do create mechanical stress in places that longer-legged cats rarely deal with. The joints bear more load per square centimeter. The spine takes a slightly different curve. I had a breeder tell me that my cat would never have arthritis. That was wrong. He is ten years old and has mild osteoarthritis in his hind paws. Not severe, but noticeable when he jumps down from the sofa. It takes him longer now. He used to launch himself like a rocket. Now he hops. The most common issues I have seen across multiple cats over the years include:
- Mild to moderate joint wear starting around age seven
- Difficulty reaching high surfaces
- Occasional back discomfort if the cat is overweight
- Normal lifespan when kept at a healthy weight
Being overweight is the single biggest risk factor. These cats are naturally compact. You cannot judge their weight by looking at them the way you would with a tall cat. A fat short-legged cat looks smaller than a fat tall cat, which makes owners underestimate the problem. Your cat will not thrive in a standard apartment if there are no ramps or steps. I removed the furniture from two rooms and rearranged everything to create lower pathways. Bookshelves became jungle gyms by adding small platforms at each shelf level. The cost was about forty reais in materials. Food and water bowls need to be on the floor or on a low riser. Elevated bowls make sense for neck comfort, but not so high that the cat cannot reach. I use a small wooden step that I found at a hardware store. It costs about fifteen reais and serves double duty as furniture and access ramp.

Litter boxes are a different problem entirely. A standard box with a high rim is unusable. I switched to a shallow tray with one open side. The cat can step in easily and dig without jumping. Clean it daily. These cats track litter because their short legs shake it off differently.
Feeding and weight management
I weigh my cat's food. Not by eye. By scale. A hundred grams of dry food is not an estimate. It is exactly one hundred grams. The bag says "feed two hundred grams per day" but that is for a general adult cat. My cat needs about one hundred sixty grams because he is less active than a long-legged cat of the same size. Wet food mixed into the dry ration helps with hydration. Kidney disease is not exclusive to these cats, but dehydration accelerates joint problems indirectly. I add about sixty grams of wet food per day to the dry portion. The total stays within the caloric limit. Treats should not exceed ten percent of daily calories. That sounds small until you realize a single treat ball can be twenty percent of the daily allowance. Read the label. Most treats are calorie-dense in ways that surprise owners.
Play and exercise expectations
They play like normal cats. They chase, they pounce, they zoom at three in the morning. The difference is in the landing. Short legs absorb impact differently. Hard surfaces are harder on joints over time. I placed foam mats in the main play area. They cost about thirty reais for a two-by-one-meter piece. The cat does not mind them. They stay cooler in summer too. Puzzle feeders work well. They slow down eating and provide mental stimulation without requiring big jumps. I use a ball feeder with adjustable difficulty. The cat has to nudle it to release kibble. It takes twenty minutes where a bowl takes two minutes. Worth it for both digestion and boredom prevention.

When to worry about the spine
If the cat shows reluctance to jump, cries when picked up, or drags one back leg slightly, get a vet visit. I noticed my cat favoring his left hind leg after a fall from a low chair. The fall was only sixty centimeters. The vet said it was a mild muscle strain, but it reinforced how sensitive these spines can be to sudden impact. Annual blood work and a physical exam are standard. At age eight, I started adding joint supplements. Glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids. The vet recommended a specific brand after checking the ingredient list. Not all supplements are equal. Some contain fillers that do nothing. I pay about eighty reais per month for a quality product. It is not cheap, but skipping it when the cat is already showing stiffness costs more later.
Socialization and temperament
These cats are generally affectionate and adaptable. Mine greets me at the door every day. She follows me between rooms. She is not a lap cat in the traditional sense, but she sleeps at the foot of the bed. Personality varies by individual. Genetics play a role, but so does early handling. Kittens that are handled frequently by multiple people tend to be more confident. Those raised in isolation often become fearful adults. If you are buying from a breeder, ask how much socialization the kittens received. A responsible breeder will show you photos and videos of the kittens interacting with children and other animals.
Buying or adopting: what to check
Visit the breeder or shelter in person. Look at the parents if possible. A cat with severely deformed legs or obvious breathing difficulty is a red flag. The condition is hereditary, so breeding two short-legged cats together increases the risk of skeletal complications in offspring. Reputable breeders mate a short-legged cat with a normal-legged cat to reduce that risk. Ask for health records. Vaccination history. Deworming schedule. Any genetic testing done on the parents. A good breeder will have this documentation readily available. If they hesitate, walk away. There are plenty of other breeders and shelters.

Cost overview
Purchase price varies widely. Shelter adoption runs about two hundred to four hundred reais. Private breeders typically charge between eight hundred and two thousand reais depending on lineage and location. Monthly expenses average three hundred to five hundred reais for food, litter, and routine care. Supplements add another eighty to one hundred reais if recommended by your vet. Emergency veterinary care is the variable that breaks budgets. I set aside a monthly savings fund equal to one week of estimated expenses. That covers minor emergencies without panic. Major surgery can run three thousand reais or more. Pet insurance exists in Brazil but is expensive for brachycephalic or breed cats. Read the fine print before signing anything. Owning a short-legged cat is manageable. It requires attention to weight, home setup, and joint health. The joy they bring is real. The extra effort is real too. Both statements are true at the same time. I do not regret getting one. I just wish I had known more before bringing her home.
