Predicativo Do Sujeito E Do Objeto
Entendendo predicativo do sujeito e do objeto na prática
A gente passa anos achando que predicativo é só classificar termo da oração pra passar em prova. Na realidade, o problema mais comum não é identificar, é saber quando ele aparece. E isso depende de dois verbos: o de ligação e o de ação com transitividade específica. O predicativo do sujeito atribui uma qualidade ao sujeito por meio de um verbo de ligação. Sujeito + VL + Predicativo do Sujeito. Exemplo clássico: "A candidata permaneceu angustiada." A palavra "angustiada" é o predicativo porque está ligada ao sujeito "a candidata" por meio do verbo "permanecer," que aqui funciona como verbo de ligação, não como ação. Já o predicativo do objeto acompanha o objeto direto quando o verbo principal tem sentido incompleto sem ele. Estrutura: Sujeito + VTD + Objeto Direto + Predicativo do Objeto. "Ele elegeu o candidato presidente." Aqui "presidente" é predicativo do objeto direto "o candidato."
O contexto decide. No caso do predicativo do objeto, a transitividade é essencial. Verbo intransitivo nunca terá predicativo do objeto. Verbo transitivo direto com complemento adjetival ou substantival é o cenário típico. Verbos como "nomear," "elegger," "chamar," "considerar," "achar" são os mais comuns nesse papelo.
I have a specific story about this that probably will stick with you. I was grading student papers on predicate identification and found a sentence where the distinction completely collapsed: "A polícia declarou o sitiado rendido." The verb "declarar" can function almost like a linking verb here, but technically it's transitive. The object is "o sitiado," and "rendido" is the predicate of that object. However, some grammarians argue "declarar" here acts as a vincular because the meaning shifts from speech act to state attribution. I stopped arguing about it and taught students to look at the semantic relationship: is there a subject undergoing a quality change, or an object being characterized? That heuristic works 90% of the time. Another counter-intuitive point most people miss: the predicative does not need to be adjacent to the noun it modifies. Word order flexibility in Portuguese means "Eles consideraram o projeto inviável" and "Eles consideraram inviável o projeto" are both grammatical, and "inviável" remains the predicative of the direct object in both cases. Rearranging the sentence doesn't change the function. The real bottleneck appears with compound predicates and periphrastic constructions. When you have "voltar a ser" or "passar a funcionar," identifying whether the following adjective is a predicate or part of the verb phrase gets messy fast. In practice, I recommend isolating the core verb first, stripping away auxiliary or periphrastic markers, and then checking if a complement describing a participant remains. If yes, it's a predicate.

One more thing that trips people up regularly: the predicative can be a noun, not just an adjective. "Nomearam-no diretor" — "diretor" is a noun functioning as predicate of the object. Same logic applies. The part of speech doesn't matter; the syntactic function does. If you're working through exercises and keep second-guessing yourself, try the substitution test. Replace the suspected predicate with a pronoun like "assim" or "o mesmo." If the sentence still holds structural meaning, you've likely identified correctly. It's not foolproof but it cuts analysis time significantly compared to parsing every single word in isolation.
