Relative pronouns aren't as simple as they teach you at first
Most textbooks list who, which, that, whose, whom, and where and expect you to memorize the table. It works for basic sentences. It breaks down when you hit actual tests or real conversation. Here is what actually matters and how to practice it without going mad.
I met the woman who lives next door. O pronome here refers to "the woman" and functions as the subject of the subordinate clause. When it is the object, it can be dropped entirely in informal English. The book which I read was boring. The book I read was boring. Both are correct. Most learners miss that omission rule.
There is a difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Defining clauses restrict the meaning. Non-defining clauses add extra information. Use commas around non-defining clauses. My brother, who lives in Lisbon, is coming to visit. Without the comma, the sentence changes meaning. It becomes restrictive, like you have multiple brothers and you are specifying which one.
Questões que realmente caem em prova
A maioria dos exercícios mal feitos confunde which e that. The company whose CEO resigned is struggling. Soa formal, mas é correto.
Whom ainda aparece em testes mais antigos. É o caso objetivo de who. The person whom I called didn't answer.
A resposta era when.
Se indica lugar, where. Se indica tempo, when. Se indica motivo, why.
Teste rápido: retire o pronome e veja se a sentence still makes sense. If it does, it was probably an object relative pronoun and can be omitted. If the sentence collapses, you need the pronome or uma alternativa.
Exercícios de fixação
Complete as frases abaixo. As respostas estão no final.
1. The man ___ called yesterday is my uncle.
2. She doesn't like the movie ___ we watched last night.
3. The house ___ I grew up has been sold.
4. I lost the pen ___ you gave me.
5. The woman, ___ car was stolen, is very upset.
6. They talked about the place ___ they met for the first time.
7. This is the reason ___ he refused to attend.
8. I remember the day ___ we graduated from university.
Erros comuns e como evitá-los
Muitos alunos colocam which para tudo. Funciona em algumas frases, mas soa artificial. Which é natural em non-defining clauses. The car that I bought is red. Soa natural. The car, which I bought, is red. Soa como tradução literal de português.
Outro erro frequente é colocar vírgula antes de that. Never do that. That não aceita vírgula. My dog, that is brown, likes to sleep. Errado. My dog that is brown likes to sleep.
Eles também confundem where com when em ocasiões que não são nem lugar nem tempo. "The situation where we found ourselves was difficult."
Testes como TOEFL e IELTS introduzem construções mais complexas, incluindo relative clauses com preposições (the house in which I grew up) e structures passivas (the person who was appointed).
1. who / that
2. that / which / (omitido)
3. where / in which
4. which / that / whom / (omitido)
5. whose
6. where
7. why
8. when
